Jennifer Fleeger, Assistant Professor of Media Studies

Dr. Fleeger received her Ph.D. from the Department of Cinema and Comparative Literature at the University of Iowa in 2009. She is presently working on two books: Sounding American: Hollywood, Opera, and Jazz considers American identity, sound technology, and film music during the cinema’s conversion to sound and Mismatched Women: The Voice Meets the Machine (forthcoming from Oxford University Press) examines singing women and media technology from Trilby to Susan Boyle. Dr. Fleeger has published articles and reviews in The Journal of Film and Video; Music, Sound and the Moving Image; Popular Music and Society; The Quarterly Review of Film and Video; and an anthology on media and religion. Her piece "Deanna Durbin and the Mismatched Voice" will appear in a forthcoming issue of Camera Obscura.
 
Research and teaching interests include: sound studies, classical Hollywood cinema, Scandinavian cinema, classical film theory, Marxist aesthetics, and media technologies.
